To maintain your Portugal Golden Visa, meeting the minimum stay requirement is essential — but just as important is knowing how to prove it.

Whether you’re planning your travel or preparing for renewal, understanding what counts and how to document your time in Portugal can save you time and stress.

In this article, we’ll explain what’s required, what proof is accepted, and how to stay compliant with confidence.

What Is the Minimum Stay Requirement for the Portugal Golden Visa?

Portugal’s Golden Visa requires investors to spend an average of seven days per year in Portugal. In practice, this means:

  • 7 days during the first year
  • 14 days during each subsequent two-year residence period

These days do not need to be consecutive and can be spread throughout the year.

In practice, however, initial residence permits are now issued for two years (instead of one year as in the past), followed by two-year renewals. As a result, Golden Visa holders must stay in Portugal for at least 14 days within each two-year period, and must provide proof of their physical presence in the country to meet this requirement.

How Do You Prove the Minimum Stay Requirement for the Portugal Golden Visa?

Golden Visa holders can prove they meet the minimum stay requirement in Portugal using travel and financial records that confirm their physical presence in the country. Common examples include passport stamps, flight boarding passes, accommodation bookings, and transactions made in Portugal. These documents may be requested when renewing the residence permit.

Portugal Golden Visa Renewal and Maintenance

The Golden Visa program starts with a 2-year residency permit, followed by two renewals over the 5-year period. At each stage, you must meet the required minimum number of days in Portugal to keep the program active.

  • 1st residency permit: valid for 2 years
  • 2nd residency permit (renewal): valid for 2 more years
  • 3rd residency permit (renewal): valid for another 2 years

During every renewal, AIMA, the Portuguese immigration authority, will check whether you’ve met the stay requirements for that specific permit period.

After maintaining the required residency period, Golden Visa holders may become eligible to apply for Portuguese citizenship.

Documents That Can Prove Your Presence in Portugal

Golden Visa holders may need to demonstrate that they have met the program’s minimum stay requirement when renewing their residence permit. In most cases, Portuguese immigration authorities accept several types of travel or financial records as evidence of your presence in the country.

1. Passport entry and exit stamps

Passport stamps showing entry into and exit from the Schengen Area are one of the most common ways to demonstrate travel dates. While Schengen stamps do not always show the exact time spent in Portugal, they can still help confirm your arrival and departure from Europe.

2. Boarding passes or flight confirmations

Airline boarding passes, flight itineraries, or travel confirmations showing trips to and from Portugal can help document the dates of your visit.

3. Hotel bookings or accommodation records

Hotel reservations, short-term rental confirmations, or invoices from accommodation providers can support your travel history and demonstrate where you stayed during your visit.

4. Credit card or bank transactions in Portugal

Transactions made in Portugal — such as restaurant payments, transportation, or retail purchases — may also help confirm that you were physically present in the country during specific dates.

5. Utility bills or local service receipts

If you own or rent property in Portugal, documents such as utility bills, internet invoices, or property management receipts can also help demonstrate your presence during a visit.

Why Keeping Records Matters

Although the Portugal Golden Visa has a very low physical presence requirement, applicants should maintain clear travel documentation throughout the residency period.

When renewing a residence permit, immigration authorities may review these records to confirm that you have met the required number of days in Portugal.

Keeping organized documentation — such as travel confirmations, accommodation records, and payment receipts — can help ensure a smooth Golden Visa renewal process and protect your pathway to permanent residency and Portuguese citizenship after five years.

What Our Clients Says

We began working with Portugal Residency Advisors (PRA) in April 2024 to consider residency in Portugal. Pedro Branco and Beatriz Garcia provided critical incite and information in helping us decide how best to apply for the Portugal Golden Visa Program. The most wonderful thing was that their advice was completely independent and they were not trying to sell us any investment scheme that they would benefit PRA. They provided professional advice and let us decide what worked best for us. We completed the process in less than two months. I highly recommend that you talk with them regardless of who you have talked with already.

My experience with Portugal Residency Advisors has been exceptionally good. Pedro Branco (client manager) provided me with clearly set out details of their services and costs and timeline. Right from the start, Beatriz Garcia (immigration lawyer) has promptly set out clearly what steps I needed to take for my visa application. She was always helpful and supportive (when I was feeling stressed by the process) and guided me through it with patience and a quick response. Portugal Residency Advisors took me through a complicated and detailed process efficiently and clearly, and I am sure that it would have taken me much longer, and with much more stress, without them.

I recommend to Beatriz Garcia and Portugal Residency Advisors completely. They helped us with our immigration meetings scheduling and preparation. I am quite sure that without Beatriz we would still be waiting for our immigration appointment. The onboarding process and documents collection process was incredibly smooth and professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

To avoid any risk, it’s safer to count full calendar days only. Interpretation may vary depending on the AIMA officer reviewing your case.

No. The required days can be spread throughout the year and do not need to be consecutive.

No. The Golden Visa is designed for investors who do not want to relocate permanently. The program only requires a minimal physical presence in Portugal.

The minimum stay requirement starts from the date your residence card is issued and must be fulfilled during the validity of each card, which is typically 2 years.

AIMA often accepts boarding passes—especially for family members—as sufficient. However, providing additional supporting documents (like receipts or photos) is always safer.

If staying at a hotel, they’ll usually notify AIMA of your presence. If not, you must report to an AIMA office or police station within 3 days of arrival to get a declaration of entry.

You can use receipts from restaurants, cafés, shops, hotels, or other services — as long as your Portuguese NIF appears on them and they match the days you were in Portugal.

Yes. While shared invoices (e.g., hotel bills listing all names) may help, each family member should have their own boarding passes, and ideally, some individual proof of stay.

Failing to meet the stay requirement may result in denial of your renewal application, so it’s crucial to plan ahead and document your visits properly.

No. Only time spent in Portugal counts toward the Golden Visa minimum stay requirement.
