What Is the CIPLE Portuguese Language Test?

CIPLE stands for Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira. It is an official Portuguese language examination administered by CAPLE, the language assessment centre associated with the University of Lisbon.

The exam corresponds to A2 under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

At this level, you should be able to introduce yourself, discuss your family, ask for directions, understand simple messages and deal with everyday situations such as shopping or visiting a doctor.

CIPLE is widely used as evidence of Portuguese language knowledge in nationality applications. It is also relevant to certain permanent residency applications.

Who Needs to Take the CIPLE Test?

Applicants for Portuguese citizenship through naturalisation based on residence generally need to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of Portuguese.

The same requirement can apply to grandchildren of Portuguese citizens and other nationality categories where language knowledge is legally relevant.

Golden Visa holders who eventually qualify to apply for citizenship may also need language evidence. However, the Golden Visa itself does not confer citizenship and the relevant residence period should be considered under the nationality law.

Citizenship by marriage is something else.In some cases, knowledge of the Portuguese language can be useful to make a good connection with the Portuguese community, but the CIPLE exam is not automatically mandatory for every spouse of a Portuguese citizen.

Likewise, children of Portuguese parents applying for nationality by origin do not generally face the same language requirement.

Applicants who are nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries may be exempt from presenting separate language evidence in relevant nationality procedures.

The important distinction is between having to demonstrate Portuguese language knowledge and having to take the CIPLE exam specifically. These are not always the same thing.

CIPLE Test Structure and Passing Score

The CIPLE exam assesses four language skills through three examination components.

ComponentDurationWeight
Reading and writing75 minutes45%
Listening30 minutes30%
Speaking15 minutes25%

The exam lasts about two hours with a scheduled break.

Reading and writing: The candidates answer questions on short texts and write simple messages.

The listening component uses everyday conversations and announcements. The speaking component usually involves interaction with an examiner and, where possible, another candidate.

To pass, candidates need an overall result of at least 55%. CAPLE awards Suficiente for results from 55% to 69%, Bom from 70% to 84%, and Muito Bom from 85% to 100%.

How Much Does the CIPLE Exam Cost?

The official CIPLE examination fee in 2026 is €95.

This is the exam fee, not the cost of Portuguese language lessons or the fees for applying for citizenship.

Candidates who require them may be offered certificate services at an additional charge. For example, CAPLE lists a €30 fee for urgent certificate issuance and €25 for a duplicate certificate.

Before paying for preparation courses, it is worth trying an official sample exam. Some candidates already have sufficient Portuguese knowledge and only need to become familiar with the examination format.

How to Register for the CIPLE Test

To take the CIPLE Portuguese Language Test, you must first register through an official test center. CAPLE runs these tests several times a year. You can register online at the CAPLE website or at one of their partner schools.

You will need to fill out a form and upload a copy of your passport or residence permit. Payment is required at the time of registration, and the fee is usually between €75 and €100 depending on the location. Make sure to keep your payment receipt.

Registration deadlines are usually about three weeks before the test date, so don’t wait too long to sign up. Test seats may be limited at some centers, especially in popular cities like Lisbon or Porto.

On the day of the test, you’ll need to bring your ID and your confirmation receipt. Arrive early to avoid last-minute problems.

Some centers allow you to register in person. If you’re unsure about the process, a trusted agency like Portugal Residency Advisors can guide you through it.

Taking the CIPLE Portuguese Language Test is a big step toward citizenship or residency. By registering on time and preparing well, you’ll have a better chance of passing without stress. Remember, this test is about showing you can live a simple daily life in Portuguese – and that’s something many people can achieve with a little effort.

What Our Clients Say

We began working with Portugal Residency Advisors (PRA) in April 2024 to consider residency in Portugal. Pedro Branco and Beatriz Garcia provided critical incite and information in helping us decide how best to apply for the Portugal Golden Visa Program. The most wonderful thing was that their advice was completely independent and they were not trying to sell us any investment scheme that they would benefit PRA. They provided professional advice and let us decide what worked best for us. We completed the process in less than two months. I highly recommend that you talk with them regardless of who you have talked with already.

My experience with Portugal Residency Advisors has been exceptionally good. Pedro Branco (client manager) provided me with clearly set out details of their services and costs and timeline. Right from the start, Beatriz Garcia (immigration lawyer) has promptly set out clearly what steps I needed to take for my visa application. She was always helpful and supportive (when I was feeling stressed by the process) and guided me through it with patience and a quick response. Portugal Residency Advisors took me through a complicated and detailed process efficiently and clearly, and I am sure that it would have taken me much longer, and with much more stress, without them.

Where and When Can You Take the CIPLE Exam?

CIPLE examinations are available at approved centres in Portugal and abroad.

In Portugal, examination locations may include Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and other cities, depending on the published calendar.

CAPLE normally holds international examination sessions in May, July and November, alongside additional national sessions in Portugal.

The exact availability depends on the examination centre. Some locations may offer fewer sessions or have limited places.

Candidates living abroad do not necessarily need to travel to Portugal to sit the examination. They should first check whether an approved CAPLE centre operates in their country.

CIPLE Exam Dates

The CIPLE Portuguese Language Test is offered several times a year at approved CAPLE examination centres in Portugal and abroad.

Exam dates depend on the examination centre and location. International sessions are generally scheduled in May, July and November, while additional sessions may be available at selected centres in Portugal.

Exam SessionUsual PeriodAvailability
Spring SessionMayPortugal and selected international centres
Summer SessionJulyPortugal and selected international centres
Autumn SessionNovemberPortugal and selected international centres
Additional SessionsVarious datesSelected centres in Portugal

These periods are indicative and should not be treated as confirmed examination dates. Applicants should consult the official CAPLE website for the latest calendar, registration deadlines and available examination centres.

Places may be limited, particularly in Lisbon, Porto and other popular locations. If you need the CIPLE certificate for a Portuguese citizenship application, it is advisable to register well in advance and allow sufficient time for the results to be issued.

How to Prepare for the CIPLE Exam

Preparation should concentrate on practical Portuguese rather than on higher level grammar.

Begin with everyday situations. Learn to introduce yourself, talk about work and family, order food, ask questions, follow basic instructions.

Useful for the written part are short Portuguese messages, advertisements and public notices. For listening practice, use European Portuguese audio whenever possible.

Speaking practice is equally important. Even candidates who understand Portuguese reasonably well may struggle to answer questions quickly during an examination.

CAPLE provides sample examination materials, which are particularly useful because they show the types of tasks candidates can expect.

Try completing a practice test under timed conditions before booking the real examination. This can help you identify whether you need further lessons or simply more practice with the format.

How Long Does It Take to Receive CIPLE Results?

Results and certificate delivery are according to CAPLE’s published schedule for each examination session.

The time to receive the certificate will vary depending on when and where you take the test, so don’t expect to be receiving the certificate at the same time as the exam.

When you are applying for citizenship you should allow extra time for the results and for the issuing of the certificate.

After the publication of the results, candidates will be able to consult them on the official CAPLE platform.

Is the CIPLE Exam Mandatory for Portuguese Citizenship?

Nope The CIPLE exam is one of the ways to prove your knowledge of Portuguese, but it is not the only one.

Depending on the nationality procedure and the circumstances of the applicant, Portuguese educational qualifications, recognized language examinations or approved training certificates may be accepted.

For example, some Portuguese language training courses can yield a recognized A2 certificate without candidates having to take the CIPLE examination.

However, completing an ordinary private language course does not automatically mean that its certificate will be accepted for citizenship.

Portuguese Citizenship Assistance

Passing the CIPLE exam is only one part of preparing an application for Portuguese citizenship.

You need to be able to show you meet the requirements of the relevant nationality route and provide the documents that support your application.

Portugal Residency Advisors helps international clients to review eligibility for citizenship, complete the necessary documentation and manage the nationality application process.

If you’re not sure whether you need to take the CIPLE exam or if you can provide other evidence of your language ability, our team can review your situation before you start the application.
