Portugal permits dual citizenship; you can acquire Portuguese citizenship and retain your current nationality. This can create new opportunities in Europe for Americans, British citizens, Canadians and many other foreign nationals while protecting their rights at home.

But dual citizenship also presents practical questions. Can I travel with two passports? Are you going to pay taxes in both countries? Are there any limitations?

This guide will tell you about dual citizenship in Portugal, which countries recognize dual citizenship and what you should know before applying.

Does Portugal Allow Dual Citizenship?

Yes. Portugal recognises dual and multiple citizenship. You can hold Portuguese nationality alongside another nationality, provided the laws of your other country allow it.

Under Article 27 of Portugal’s Nationality Law, when someone holds Portuguese nationality alongside another nationality, Portuguese nationality takes precedence under Portuguese law.

For example, someone who becomes both American and Portuguese will generally be treated as a Portuguese citizen by Portuguese authorities.

There is no separate application for dual citizenship. You apply for Portuguese nationality through an eligible legal route and, if your original country permits it, retain both nationalities.

Which Countries Allow Dual Citizenship With Portugal?

Many countries allow their citizens to acquire Portuguese nationality without automatically losing their original citizenship.

CountryDual Citizenship With Portugal
United StatesAllowed
United KingdomAllowed
CanadaAllowed
BrazilAllowed
AustraliaAllowed
FranceAllowed
GermanyAllowed
IndiaGenerally not allowed

For instance, an American who becomes a citizen of Portugal can generally retain both passports. But, generally, an Indian citizen can not continue to be an Indian citizen if he voluntarily acquires Portuguese nationality.

Different countries have different rules . Some governments require people to notify them , or restrict certain classes of citizens .

Check the rules relating to nationality for your current country before you apply – especially if you have a nationality that limits dual citizenship.

Can Americans Have US and Portuguese Dual Citizenship?

Yes. The United States permits its citizens to hold another nationality, including Portuguese citizenship.

An American who becomes Portuguese does not normally lose US citizenship simply by acquiring a second nationality.

This can be particularly attractive for Americans with Portuguese parents or grandparents, those married to Portuguese citizens or people planning to establish residency in Portugal.

For example, an American who obtains Portuguese citizenship through a Portuguese parent can continue living in the United States while holding the right to relocate to Portugal or another EU country.

However, American citizens remain subject to US legal and tax obligations, even when living abroad.

Do Dual Citizens Pay Taxes in Both Countries?

Having Portuguese citizenship doesn’t mean you will be a Portuguese tax resident.

In Portugal, the rule is that a person’s individual tax residency is determined by their place of residence and residential situation, rather than by nationality alone.

Two common factors are spending more than 183 days in Portugal during a relevant 12-month period or maintaining accommodation under circumstances indicating an intention to occupy it as a habitual residence.

Consider two examples.

An American living in the US: If they become Portuguese citizens but continue to live and work in the US, Portuguese nationality alone will not usually make them a Portuguese tax resident.

An American moving to Portugal: If they become a Portuguese tax resident they may have Portuguese tax requirements and US’ tax reporting requirements too.

Unlike Portugal, the United States generally taxes its citizens on income earned worldwide, regardless of where they live, although exclusions, foreign tax credits and treaty provisions can help prevent double taxation.

For British, Canadian and many other dual citizens, tax obligations usually depend primarily on tax residence and applicable domestic rules.

Dual citizenship and dual tax residency are different concepts. Anyone planning to relocate should review their circumstances with a qualified tax adviser.

Can You Travel With Two Passports?

Yes. A dual citizen of Portugal can hold both a Portuguese passport and a passport from his other country of nationality.

But which passport you use matters.

For example, a dual citizen of the US and Portugal should normally use his or her American passport when entering or leaving the US, as required by law in the US.

They can prove that they are Portuguese citizens when they enter Portugal, using their Portuguese passport or Citizen Card.

British-Portuguese dual citizens should also check the UK documentation requirements before travelling to the United Kingdom.

When travelling between countries, carry both valid passports where appropriate and ensure that your airline booking and travel documents are consistent.

How to Obtain Portuguese Dual Citizenship

Portugal does not offer a separate dual citizenship application. Applicants shall be required to meet the conditions for Portuguese nationality by one of the means provided by law.

The most popular ways to obtain Portuguese citizenship are by descent through a parent or grandparent, by marrying a Portuguese citizen or by naturalization after the required period of legal residence.

Following changes introduced in May 2026, the general residence requirement for new naturalisation applications is seven years for EU and Portuguese-speaking country nationals and ten years for most other foreign nationals.

These residence periods do not apply to every nationality route. For example, someone applying through a Portuguese parent may qualify without ever having lived in Portugal.

The documents, government fees and language requirements depend on the route used.

What Our Clients Say

We began working with Portugal Residency Advisors (PRA) in April 2024 to consider residency in Portugal. Pedro Branco and Beatriz Garcia provided critical incite and information in helping us decide how best to apply for the Portugal Golden Visa Program. The most wonderful thing was that their advice was completely independent and they were not trying to sell us any investment scheme that they would benefit PRA. They provided professional advice and let us decide what worked best for us. We completed the process in less than two months. I highly recommend that you talk with them regardless of who you have talked with already.

My experience with Portugal Residency Advisors has been exceptionally good. Pedro Branco (client manager) provided me with clearly set out details of their services and costs and timeline. Right from the start, Beatriz Garcia (immigration lawyer) has promptly set out clearly what steps I needed to take for my visa application. She was always helpful and supportive (when I was feeling stressed by the process) and guided me through it with patience and a quick response. Portugal Residency Advisors took me through a complicated and detailed process efficiently and clearly, and I am sure that it would have taken me much longer, and with much more stress, without them.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Portuguese Dual Citizenship

The biggest advantage of Portuguese dual citizenship is the protection of rights in two countries.

As a Portuguese citizen you will also be an EU citizen, with the right to live and work in other EU Member States according to the applicable European rules.

This can be employment, education, retirement and family relocation opportunities.

For example, a dual citizen of Canada and Portugal could be able to stay resident in Canada and then choose to move to Spain or Germany without applying for the residence visa that is required of Canadian nationals.

Under certain circumstances Portuguese nationality can also be transmitted to children, which may also create similar opportunities for future generations.

But having two nationalities can mean additional responsibilities.

Dual citizens might have to file tax returns, do military or civic duty in some countries, and have limited diplomatic protection if they are in a country where they are also a citizen.

These considerations do not necessarily outweigh the benefits, but should be understood prior to application.
